Wetter: Harkort Reservoir on the Ruhr, Early Industrial Pioneer Friedrich Harkort, and the Hillside Town Above Herdecke
Wetter an der Ruhr has about 29,100 residents and lies in the Ennepe-Ruhr-Kreis of Nordrhein-Westfalen. The Harkortsee, a reservoir formed by a weir on the Ruhr, dominates the town's geography. Friedrich Harkort, an early industrialist who promoted railways and mechanised production in 19th-century Westphalia, came from Wetter. His legacy is documented in the local Harkort tower and memorial.
Herdecke is directly to the north across the Ruhr. Witten lies east. Hagen is a few kilometres south. Dortmund is about 15 kilometres northeast. The Ruhr valley here is steep-sided, with the town built across hillside terraces. The Ruhr cycle path runs through along the reservoir.
