Wiesbaden is the capital of Hessen, sitting on the north bank of the Rhine opposite Mainz. Population is around 279,000. The city has 26 hot springs; the Kochbrunnen spring delivers water at 66 degrees Celsius. Emperor Wilhelm II favoured the city as a spa resort, and much of the Wilhelmine-era architecture survives. The Kurhaus, built in 1907, houses one of Germany's oldest casinos (Spielbank Wiesbaden). Fyodor Dostoevsky gambled away his money here in 1865, an experience that informed his novel "The Gambler."
Wiesbaden lacks a large university but hosts the Bundesamt fuer Statistik (Federal Statistical Office) and several federal agencies. The Hessischer Landtag meets in the Stadtschloss on the Marktplatz. The Neroberg hill offers a view across to the Taunus mountains. Rail connections to Frankfurt are frequent (40 minutes by S-Bahn). Wiesbaden and Mainz share a Rhine crossing and a regional identity but sit in different Bundeslaender with different police structures. The adult companionship landscape in Wiesbaden is quieter than in neighbouring Frankfurt.
