Charlottenburg: Old West Berlin's Grand Dame, the Kurfuerstendamm, and Faded Glamour That Still Holds
Charlottenburg is part of Berlin's Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf borough with a population around 129,000. During the Cold War, Charlottenburg was the de facto centre of West Berlin; the Kurfuerstendamm (Ku'damm), a 3.5-kilometre boulevard modelled on the Champs-Elysees, was its showpiece. The Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedaechtniskirche, bombed in 1943 and preserved as a ruin with a modernist addition, anchors the western end at Breitscheidplatz. Schloss Charlottenburg, Berlin's largest palace, was built for Sophie Charlotte of Hannover in 1699.
The Deutsche Oper Berlin, TU Berlin, and the Charlottenburg campus of the Universitaet der Kuenste are all here. The Savignyplatz and surrounding streets retain a literary cafe culture. After reunification, Berlin's commercial centre shifted eastward to Mitte, and Charlottenburg's Ku'damm lost some of its preeminence.
