Friedrichsfelde is a locality in Berlin's Lichtenberg borough with a population around 55,000. The Tierpark Berlin, established in 1955 as East Berlin's answer to the Zoologischer Garten in the west, is one of the largest landscape zoos in Europe, covering 160 hectares. The Schloss Friedrichsfelde, a Baroque palace within the Tierpark grounds, hosts concerts and exhibitions. The palace was built in 1695 and later remodelled in the early Neoclassical style.
The residential area surrounding the Tierpark consists largely of GDR-era housing blocks interspersed with older villas near the palace. The U5 line connects Friedrichsfelde to Alexanderplatz in about 15 minutes. The neighbourhood is quiet and family-oriented, lacking the commercial density of inner Berlin. The Dong Xuan Center, a large Vietnamese market hall nearby, adds an unusual commercial element. Adult companionship follows Berlin's city-state regulations.
