Hellersdorf: Berlin's Eastern Plattenbau Twin, Wuhletal Valley, and Marzahn's Quieter Half
Hellersdorf is part of Berlin's Marzahn-Hellersdorf borough with a population around 84,000. Built between 1979 and 1987 as one of the GDR's last major housing projects, Hellersdorf shares Marzahn's Plattenbau character but was constructed later and received slightly more ambitious urban planning. The Wuhletal, a green valley corridor running through the district, provides an unexpected strip of nature between the concrete tower blocks.
The Hellersdorf U-Bahn extension, completed in the late 1980s, was one of the last GDR infrastructure projects. The Regine-Hildebrandt-Haus commemorates the popular Brandenburg social affairs minister. Since reunification, Hellersdorf has undergone extensive renovation: facades have been insulated and coloured, some blocks demolished, and new low-rise housing inserted. The Alice Salomon Hochschule, a university of applied sciences focusing on social work, is based here. The district borders Brandenburg; fields begin within walking distance of the last U-Bahn stop.
