Koepenick: Captain's Imposture, Mueggelsee, and Berlin's Green Southeastern Borough
Koepenick is a locality in Berlin's Treptow-Koepenick borough with a population around 67,000. The Hauptmann von Koepenick (Captain of Koepenick) incident of 1906, when cobbler Wilhelm Voigt dressed as a Prussian officer, commandeered soldiers, arrested the mayor, and stole the town treasury, became a celebrated satire of German militarism. Carl Zuckmayer's play immortalised the story. The Schloss Koepenick, a Baroque palace on an island in the Dahme river, houses the Kunstgewerbemuseum's furniture collection.
The Mueggelsee, Berlin's largest lake, provides swimming, sailing, and lakeside walks. The Mueggelberge, the highest natural point in Berlin at 115 metres, is forested and surprisingly wild for a capital city.
