Lichterfelde is a locality in Berlin's Steglitz-Zehlendorf borough with a population around 86,000. The world's first electric tramway ran here in 1881, built by Werner von Siemens between the Lichterfelde station and the Prussian Military Academy. The Botanischer Garten Berlin, one of the largest and most species-rich botanical gardens in the world with over 20,000 plant species, lies on Lichterfelde's western border. The Kadettenanstalt (Prussian Cadet Academy), later used by the US military as Andrews Barracks, has been redeveloped as the Lichterfelde-Sued residential quarter.
Lichterfelde is divided into Lichterfelde-West and Lichterfelde-Ost by the Teltow Canal. Lichterfelde-West has an affluent villa character with tree-lined streets; Lichterfelde-Ost is more mixed with post-war housing. The Thermometersiedlung, a 1970s housing estate, is a listed example of late-modernist urban planning. The S-Bahn connects to central Berlin in about 25 minutes. Adult companionship follows Berlin's city-state regulations in a solidly residential district.
