Marzahn is part of Berlin's Marzahn-Hellersdorf borough with a population around 112,000. The district is defined by its Plattenbau (prefabricated concrete panel buildings), constructed between 1977 and 1989 as the GDR's largest housing project. At its peak, over 100,000 people lived in Marzahn's tower blocks. Since reunification, extensive renovation has transformed many buildings, and population decline has been partially reversed by new residents attracted to relatively low rents and generous green space.
The Gaerten der Welt (Gardens of the World), originally created in 1987 as the Berliner Gartenschau, is an internationally recognised park with Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Balinese, and other themed gardens. The IGA 2017 (International Garden Exhibition) further expanded the grounds and added a cable car. The Biesdorf Palace, a 19th-century villa, houses an art gallery. Marzahn sits in Berlin's eastern periphery, bordering Brandenburg. The S-Bahn connects to Alexanderplatz in about 25 minutes. Adult companionship follows Berlin's city-state framework, though Marzahn's character is distinctly suburban and residential.
