Neu-Hohenschoenhausen is a locality in Berlin's Lichtenberg borough with a population around 57,000. The Gedenkstaette Berlin-Hohenschoenhausen, the former central remand prison of the Stasi (East German secret police), is the area's most significant site. Thousands of political prisoners were detained and interrogated here between 1951 and 1989. Guided tours, often led by former inmates, make it one of Berlin's most sobering memorial sites.
The residential area consists almost entirely of GDR-era Plattenbau (prefabricated concrete slab) housing estates built in the 1980s. The Obersee and Orankesee, two small lakes, provide the only natural relief in the otherwise grid-like landscape. The tram network connects to Alexanderplatz in about 30 minutes. Neu-Hohenschoenhausen is predominantly residential and working-class, distant from Berlin's tourist and nightlife zones. Adult companionship follows Berlin's city-state regulations.
