Reinickendorf is a borough in northern Berlin with a population around 84,000 in the central locality. The borough includes the former Tegel Airport (TXL), which closed in 2020 after 60 years and is being redeveloped as the Tegel Projekt, one of Europe's largest urban development sites. The Tegeler See (Lake Tegel) and Tegeler Fliess, a glacial valley stream, provide green corridors. Reinickendorf was part of the French sector during the Cold War; the Quartier Napoleon in the south served as the French military headquarters.
The Borsigturm, an Expressionist tower completed in 1924 for the Borsig locomotive factory, was one of Berlin's first high-rise buildings and is now the Borsig Tower hotel. The Maerkisches Viertel, a large 1960s social housing estate in the north, was controversial when built but has since been renovated. The Schaefer brewery in Reinickendorf brewed beer until the 1990s. The borough has a suburban character, greener and quieter than inner-city Berlin. Adult companionship follows Berlin's city-state regulations.
