Rummelsburg: Rummelsburger Bucht Waterfront Development, Former Prison Grounds, and the Lichtenberg Locality on the Spree in Eastern Berlin
Rummelsburg is a locality in Berlin's Lichtenberg borough with roughly 25,700 residents. The Rummelsburger Bucht, a bay on the Spree river, has been developed into a waterfront residential area with houseboats and new apartment buildings. The former Rummelsburg prison, a GDR-era detention facility, stood on the bay's shore; parts of the site are now redeveloped. The area has transformed rapidly since the 2000s.
Friedrichshain is across the Spree to the west. Karlshorst lies to the south. Lichtenberg centre is to the east. The S-Bahn at Ostkreuz, one of Berlin's busiest stations, is nearby. The Spree riverside walk connects Rummelsburg to Stralau and Treptow. New residential construction continues around the bay.
