Celle: Half-Timbered Paradise, Ducal Residence, and Lower Saxony's Best-Preserved Old Town
Celle has a population around 71,000 and sits on the Aller river in Lower Saxony, at the southern edge of the Lueneburger Heide. The Altstadt has over 400 half-timbered houses spanning five centuries, making it one of the most complete collections of Fachwerk architecture in Europe. The Celler Schloss (Castle), a Welf ducal residence with origins in the 13th century, houses what is believed to be the oldest continuously operating court theatre in Germany, dating to 1674.
The Oberlandesgericht Celle (Higher Regional Court) makes the city a judicial centre. The Bomann-Museum documents Celle's history and the surrounding Heide culture. The French Garden, laid out in 1695, is one of the oldest Baroque gardens in Lower Saxony. Caroline Mathilde, the ill-fated Queen of Denmark, lived in exile at the castle until her death in 1775.
