Hameln: Pied Piper Legend, Weser Renaissance, and the Rat Catcher's Tourist Magnet
Hameln has a population around 59,000 and sits on the Weser river in Lower Saxony. The Rattenfaenger von Hameln (Pied Piper of Hamelin) legend, first recorded in the 13th century, tells of a piper who lured away 130 children in 1284. The story has been retold by the Brothers Grimm, Robert Browning, and countless others. Every Sunday from May to September, a free open-air play re-enacts the tale on the Hochzeitshaus terrace.
The Altstadt features some of Germany's finest Weser Renaissance architecture, characterised by ornate stone facades, scrollwork gables, and biblical inscriptions. The Rattenfaengerhaus (Rat Catcher's House) from 1602 and the Hochzeitshaus (Wedding House) from 1617 are the most prominent examples. The Muenster St. Bonifatius, originally Romanesque, anchors the old town. The Weser cycling path passes through the city. The Weserbergland, a hilly landscape of sandstone and forests, surrounds Hameln. Hannover is about 45 kilometres northeast. Adult companionship follows Lower Saxony's regulatory approach.
