Hildesheim: Thousand-Year Rose, UNESCO Churches, and Lower Saxony's Romanesque Treasure
Hildesheim has a population around 103,000 and sits in the Innerste river valley in Lower Saxony. The Michaeliskirche and the Dom (Cathedral), both UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1985, represent outstanding examples of Romanesque architecture. The Tausendjaerige Rosenstock (Thousand-Year Rose) on the cathedral apse is reportedly the oldest living rose bush in the world, documented since at least 815 AD. It survived the cathedral's near-total destruction in a 1945 bombing raid and sprouted again from the roots weeks later.
The Marktplatz was reconstructed in the 1980s with replicas of the half-timbered Knochenhaueramtshaus (Butchers' Guild Hall), originally built in 1529 and considered one of Germany's most beautiful wooden buildings before its destruction. The Roemer-Pelizaeus-Museum has a world-class Egyptian collection. Hildesheim's university (HAWK) trains architects and designers. The Bischofsmuhle, a former bishop's mill, now houses cultural venues. The city sits between Hannover (30 kilometres north) and the Harz mountains to the south.
