Lueneburg: Salt City, Crooked Houses, and the Hanseatic Town That Sank Under Its Own Wealth
Lueneburg has a population around 71,000 and sits on the Ilmenau river in Lower Saxony. Salt mining from the 10th century onward made Lueneburg one of the richest Hanseatic cities, but centuries of extraction created underground caverns that caused buildings to sink, tilt, and lean. The Am Sande square has dramatically crooked facades. The Deutsches Salzmuseum, housed in a former salt works, documents this history. Salt production continued until 1980.
The Altstadt is one of the best-preserved in northern Germany because Lueneburg was not significantly bombed during the war. The Leuphana Universitaet has around 10,000 students and occupies a campus including a Libeskind-designed building. The Lueneburger Heide (Lueneburg Heath), one of Germany's most popular nature areas, extends to the south. The Rathaus has interiors spanning 600 years.
