Nordenham has about 27,700 residents and lies on the western bank of the Weser estuary in the Wesermarsch district of Niedersachsen. The town developed around its port and zinc smelting industry in the 19th century. A ferry crosses the Weser to Bremerhaven on the eastern bank. The Moorseer Moor, a raised bog area, lies north of the town.
Bremerhaven is directly opposite across the Weser. Brake (Unterweser) is about 20 kilometres south. Oldenburg is roughly 45 kilometres southeast. The Butjadingen peninsula extends north towards the North Sea coast. The landscape is flat marshland, much of it reclaimed and protected by dykes. The Weser here is already tidal and several kilometres wide.
