Northeim has a population of about 30,900 and lies in southern Niedersachsen on the Rhume river, serving as the Kreisstadt of the Landkreis Northeim. The Northeimer Seenplatte, a group of former gravel pit lakes south of the town, has developed into a recreation and nature area with swimming, sailing and birdwatching.
Parts of the medieval town wall and half-timbered houses survive in the old centre. Goettingen is roughly 20 kilometres south. Einbeck, known for its Bockbier brewing tradition, lies about 15 kilometres southwest. The Solling-Vogler nature park is to the west. Katlenburg-Lindau and Moringen are neighbouring communities. The Leine valley runs broadly north-south through the district.
