Salzgitter: Steel City Without a Centre, Scattered Settlements, and Lower Saxony's Industrial Outlier
Salzgitter has a population around 104,000 and is one of Germany's most unusual cities. Created in 1942 by merging 29 previously independent villages and towns to house steelworkers, the city has no single centre. Salzgitter-Lebenstedt and Salzgitter-Bad, 15 kilometres apart, function as dual town centres. The Salzgitter AG steel works remain one of Germany's largest steel producers, employing thousands. The city covers 224 square kilometres, an area comparable to much larger cities, with farmland and forest between the scattered settlements.
Schloss Salder, a Renaissance palace in the village of Salder, houses the city museum. The Salzgitter-Hoehenzug, a low ridge running through the city area, provides hiking trails. The Salzgittersee (artificial lake) was created in the 1970s for recreation. Salzgitter has struggled to diversify beyond steel; unemployment has historically been above the Lower Saxony average. The MAN truck plant in Salzgitter-Watenstedt and VW component manufacturing nearby provide some industrial breadth. Adult companionship follows Lower Saxony's regulatory approach.
