Soltau has about 21,950 inhabitants and lies in the Heidekreis of Niedersachsen, at the heart of the Lueneburger Heide. The Heide Park Resort, one of northern Germany's largest amusement parks, is located just outside town and draws over a million visitors annually. The Boehme river flows through the town centre.

The Soltau-Fallingbostel military training area, one of the largest in Europe, lies to the west and has been used by NATO forces since the post-war period. The heathland landscape surrounding Soltau is sandy and flat, with pine and birch forest interspersed with open heath, managed by controlled grazing with Heidschnucken sheep.
