Situated on the southwestern shore of the Jadebusen, Varel is a Friesland district town of roughly 25,200 inhabitants in Niedersachsen. The Jadebusen is a large bay that opens into the North Sea, and Varel's position along its coastline has shaped the town for centuries. The Schlossplatz in the centre features remnants of the old Varel lordship. Wilhelmshaven lies about 20 kilometres north across the bay. Oldenburg is roughly 30 kilometres to the south. The Dangaster Moor nature area extends south of town, and the coastal marshland gives way to geest terrain further inland. The Vareler Hafen, a small tidal port, connects to the mudflat landscape of the Wattenmeer.
