Vechta: Oldenburger Muensterland University Town, Stoppelmarkt Fair, and the Catholic Agricultural Centre in the Northwest
Vechta's population is around 29,700 and the town lies in the Oldenburger Muensterland in Niedersachsen. The Universitaet Vechta, a small university, adds a student presence to what is otherwise an agricultural market town. The Stoppelmarkt, held annually in August, is one of the largest folk fairs in northern Germany, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors over several days.
Cloppenburg is about 25 kilometres west. Diepholz lies to the north. Osnabrueck is roughly 50 kilometres south. The flat farmland surrounding the town supports intensive agriculture and food processing. The Oldenburger Muensterland is distinctly Catholic, unusual for a Niedersachsen region. Lohne and Dinklage are neighbouring towns.
