Westerstede: Rhododendron Town in the Ammerland
Westerstede is the largest municipality in the Landkreis Ammerland of Niedersachsen, with about 21,900 inhabitants. The Ammerland is Germany's main nursery and rhododendron growing region, and Westerstede sits at its centre. Oldenburg is roughly 20 kilometres east. Bad Zwischenahn, with its lakeside spa, borders to the southeast. The landscape is flat and green, with hedgerows, meadows, and scattered farmsteads characteristic of the Ammerland. The Ammerlaender Bauernhaus, a regional style of thatched farmhouse, is still visible in the surrounding villages.
