The Fliegerhorst Wittmund, a German Air Force base operating Eurofighter jets, is one of the town's largest employers. Wilhelmshaven is roughly 25 kilometres east. The East Frisian island of Langeoog is accessible by ferry from the nearby harbour at Bensersiel. Esens, a small town with a medieval church, borders to the west. Tea drinking, a deeply rooted East Frisian tradition, is more common here per capita than anywhere else in Germany.
