Wolfenbuettel: Jaegermeister Distillery, Herzog August Bibliothek, and Lower Saxony's Literary Treasure
Wolfenbuettel has a population around 55,000 and lies on the Oker river in Lower Saxony, about 12 kilometres south of Braunschweig. The Herzog August Bibliothek (HAB), one of the world's most important research libraries for European cultural history, holds manuscripts and early printed books of extraordinary value. Gotthold Ephraim Lessing served as its librarian from 1770 to 1781 and wrote "Nathan der Weise" here. The Leibniz was another notable librarian.
Jaegermeister, the herbal liqueur sold worldwide, is produced in Wolfenbuettel by Mast-Jaegermeister SE. The Schloss Wolfenbuettel, one of the largest castles in Lower Saxony, served as the ducal residence of Brunswick-Wolfenbuettel. The Fachwerk-Altstadt (half-timbered old town) has over 600 preserved houses. The Lessinghaus and the Lessingtheater commemorate the playwright. The Okerkanal runs through the town centre.
