Wolfsburg has a population around 123,000 and exists because of Volkswagen. The city was founded in 1938 as "Stadt des KdF-Wagens bei Fallersleben" to house workers for the new Volkswagen factory. It was renamed Wolfsburg in 1945. The VW plant is one of the world's largest automobile factories, employing around 60,000 people. The Autostadt, VW's visitor centre and theme park on the factory site, includes the two glass car towers (Autotuerme) where newly built vehicles are stored before collection by their owners.
The Phaeno Science Centre, designed by Zaha Hadid and opened in 2005, sits on concrete stilts near the station. Wolfsburg has no medieval centre, no old town, no cathedral. It is Germany's purest example of a company town that became a city. VfL Wolfsburg won the Bundesliga in 2009. The Allerpark recreation area and the Schloss Wolfsburg (a 16th-century castle that predates the city by 400 years) provide some character. Adult companionship follows Lower Saxony's framework, in a city whose demographics are shaped almost entirely by VW's workforce.
