Neustrelitz was purpose-built in the early 18th century as the residence of the Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, and the regular star-shaped street plan radiating from the central Marktplatz reflects this planned origin. About 22,290 people live here in the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The Schlosspark, laid out in English landscape style, survives though the Schloss itself was destroyed in 1945. The Schlossgarten Orangerie and the neoclassical Schlosskirche remain.
The town sits between the Zierker See and the Glambecker See. The Mueritz National Park, Germany's largest land-based national park, begins about 20 kilometres to the west. Neubrandenburg is roughly 30 kilometres north. The Mecklenburg lake district stretches in every direction, with hundreds of lakes connected by rivers and canals. The Friedrich-Wolf-Theater, one of the oldest continuously operating theatres in Mecklenburg, hosts a year-round programme.
