Rostock: Hanseatic Port on the Baltic, Warnemuende Beach, and the Northeast's Largest City
Rostock is the largest city in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern with a population around 198,000. The city sits on the Warnow river, 12 kilometres inland from the Baltic Sea. Warnemuende, the seaside resort at the river mouth, has one of Germany's widest beaches at 150 metres. Rostock's port handles the most cargo of any German Baltic harbour. The Universitaet Rostock, founded in 1419, is the oldest university in the Baltic region. The Marienkirche houses an astronomical clock from 1472 that still functions and will continue to do so until 2150.
The Hanse Sail, an annual tall ship festival, draws over a million visitors. Rostock lost nearly a third of its population after reunification as shipbuilding collapsed, but numbers have slowly recovered. The Kroepeliner Strasse pedestrian zone runs through the centre past surviving medieval gabled houses. Rostock is three hours from Berlin by regional train, or two and a half by IC.
