Waren sits on the northern shore of the Mueritz, Germany's largest lake entirely within its borders, in the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. About 21,470 people live here. The town serves as the main access point to the Mueritz National Park, which protects the eastern shore of the lake and a large area of forest, bog, and smaller lakes. The Mueritzeum, an aquarium and nature discovery centre, opened in 2007 and focuses on the freshwater ecosystems of the lake district.
Neubrandenburg is about 55 kilometres northeast. Roebel lies on the western shore. The harbour at Waren is busy in summer with sailing boats, motor launches, and excursion vessels. Tourism and recreation drive much of the local economy, supplemented by fishing and agriculture in the surrounding lowland.
