Werder lies on an island and the surrounding banks of the Havel river, about 10 kilometres southwest of Potsdam in Brandenburg. The town has roughly 22,380 inhabitants and belongs to the Landkreis Potsdam-Mittelmark. The Altstadt sits on the island itself, connected by bridges to the newer parts of town on both shores. Fruit orchards, particularly cherry, apple, and plum, surround Werder and supply the annual Baumblutenfest, a blossom festival held since 1879 that draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each spring.
Potsdam is a short train ride east. Berlin is about 35 kilometres northeast. The Havel here widens into lake-like stretches used for sailing and swimming. Werder has attracted a growing commuter population, with new residential areas on the mainland shores.
