Wismar has a population around 45,300 and lies on the Baltic coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, sheltered in a natural bay. Together with Stralsund, Wismar's Altstadt holds UNESCO World Heritage status as an outstanding example of Hanseatic brick Gothic architecture. The Marktplatz, one of the largest medieval market squares in northern Germany, is framed by the Wasserkunst, a Renaissance-era waterworks pavilion. The Nikolaikirche's nave reaches 37 metres, among the tallest brick church interiors in the world.
Wismar was under Swedish rule from 1648 until 1803, longer than any other German Hanseatic city, and the Schwedenkoepfe (Swedish heads) at the harbour entrance recall this period. The Alter Hafen remains a working harbour alongside a yacht marina. Shipbuilding at the MV Werften (now restructured) was a major employer. Schwerin, the state capital, is 30 kilometres to the south. The Insel Poel, a Baltic island, is accessible from Wismar. Adult companionship follows Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's regulatory approach.
