Ahaus: Textile Heritage, Dutch Border Proximity, and the Westmuensterland's Quiet Centre
Ahaus has a population around 38,200 and lies in the Westmuensterland region of Nordrhein-Westfalen, close to the Dutch border. The textile industry dominated the local economy through much of the 20th century. The town is also known as the site of a former interim nuclear waste storage facility (Brennelemente-Zwischenlager Ahaus), which has shaped local politics.
The Schloss Ahaus, a baroque palace originally built as a moated castle for the bishops of Muenster, houses cultural facilities including the Torhausmuseum. The surrounding parkland provides green space. The flat Muensterland landscape is popular with cyclists, and routes connect to the Dutch border towns.
