Ahlen has a population around 55,000 and lies on the Werse river in the Muensterland region of Nordrhein-Westfalen. Unusually for the Muensterland, which is otherwise agricultural, Ahlen had a significant coal mining industry; the Zeche Westfalen operated until 2000. The Zechenstadt (colliery town) nickname reflects this industrial chapter. The Werse river, a tributary of the Ems, provides a green corridor through the town.
The Marienkirche and the Bartholomaeuskirche anchor the old centre. The Kunstmuseum Ahlen, housed in a former school, shows modern and contemporary art. The Fritz-Winter-Haus commemorates the abstract painter who lived here. Ahlen sits roughly midway between Muenster (35 kilometres north) and Hamm (15 kilometres south). The Muensterlaender Parklandschaft, characterised by hedgerows and scattered farmsteads, begins north of the town. Adult companionship follows NRW's regulatory framework.
