The district contains sections of Roman and medieval Koeln's archaeological layers.
The Dom and Altstadt-Nord are directly to the north. Deutz is across the Rhine. Bayenthal lies to the south. The Rheinauhafen, a redeveloped harbour area with the Krahnhaeuser (crane houses), forms the southwestern edge. Koeln Suedbahnhof provides S-Bahn connections. The Volkstheater Millowitsch has its home in the district.
