Altstadt-Sued is a central district of Koeln with around 27,500 inhabitants. The Heumarkt, one of Koeln's main squares, hosts the annual Christmas market and weekly events. The Malakoff Tower stands at the Rhine embankment. Severinstrasse, the main commercial street, runs south through the Severinsviertel with independent shops and Koelsch pubs. The district contains sections of Roman and medieval Koeln's archaeological layers.
The Dom and Altstadt-Nord are directly to the north. Deutz is across the Rhine. Bayenthal lies to the south. The Rheinauhafen, a redeveloped harbour area with the Krahnhaeuser (crane houses), forms the southwestern edge. Koeln Suedbahnhof provides S-Bahn connections. The Volkstheater Millowitsch has its home in the district.
