The Atta-Hoehle, discovered in 1907 during quarrying operations, is Germany's largest publicly accessible stalactite cave and Attendorn's main attraction. Underground, the formations span several large chambers. Above ground, Attendorn is a town of roughly 24,750 people in the Kreis Olpe of Nordrhein-Westfalen, in the western Sauerland. The Biggesee, a reservoir completed in 1965, lies directly south of town and provides drinking water for much of the Ruhr area while also serving as a recreational lake.
Olpe is about 10 kilometres south. Lennestadt borders to the east. Finnentrop lies to the north. The hilly Sauerland terrain rises to over 500 metres around Attendorn, with extensive spruce and beech forest. The town's Hanseaticum museum recalls Attendorn's status as a Hanseatic town in the Middle Ages, one of very few in the Sauerland.
Attendorn's Altstadt retains a compact medieval layout around the Sauerlaender Dom, the colloquial name for the Pfarrkirche St. Johannes Baptist. The annual Osterfeuerfest draws large crowds each spring. The town's economy combines tourism around the Atta cave and Biggesee with metalworking and small manufacturing.
