Bad Honnef has roughly 25,300 inhabitants and lies on the right bank of the Rhine in the Rhein-Sieg-Kreis of Nordrhein-Westfalen, at the foot of the Siebengebirge. Konrad Adenauer, the first Chancellor of the Federal Republic, lived in the Rhoendorf district from 1937 until his death in 1967. His house is now a museum. The town holds spa status, and the mild Rhine valley microclimate supports wine-growing on south-facing slopes. The Drachenfels peak across the river is visible from much of the town.
Koenigswinter is directly to the north. Bonn is about 15 kilometres northwest. Bad Honnef am Rhein borders Rheinland-Pfalz across the river. Linz am Rhein lies downstream. The Siebengebirge nature park rises steeply behind the town. The Rhine here transitions from the Mittelrhein gorge into the broader Cologne lowlands.
