Beckum has a population around 37,800 and lies in the eastern Muensterland in Nordrhein-Westfalen, about 35 kilometres east of Muenster. The cement industry has defined the local economy since the 19th century, exploiting the limestone deposits of the Beckumer Berge hills. Several cement works still operate, and the quarrying has left distinctive landscape scars now partly reclaimed as nature areas.
The Beckumer Berge, low hills rising from the flat Muensterland, are unusual for the region and offer walking trails. The Pheonixsee, a flooded former quarry, has become a recreational lake. The Propsteikirche St. Stephanus dates from the Romanesque period. The town centre has a compact market square. Hamm is about 20 kilometres south. Adult companionship operates under NRW regulations.
