Bergisch Gladbach: Cologne's Green Eastern Neighbour, Paper Mills, and the Bergisches Land's Largest City
Bergisch Gladbach has a population around 106,000 and borders Cologne to the east. The city has been a paper-making centre since the 16th century; the Papiermuhle Alte Dombach, a water-powered paper mill from 1614, is now the LVR-Industriemuseum and one of the best-preserved early industrial sites in the Rhineland. The Strunde stream powered dozens of mills along its course through the city. Bergisch Gladbach belongs to the Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis, part of the Bergisches Land region.
The Bensberger Schloss, an 18th-century Baroque palace in the Bensberg district, was designed by the Venetian architect Matteo Alberti and is now a luxury hotel. The adjacent Altes Schloss dates to the 12th century. The city is heavily forested compared to the Cologne plain, with the Koenigsforst and Naturpark Bergisches Land providing extensive woodland. Bergisch Gladbach gained city rights only in 1856. Despite bordering Cologne, the city maintains a distinct identity as the gateway to the hilly Bergisches Land.
