Bottrop has a population around 120,000 and lies at the northwestern edge of the Ruhr area in Nordrhein-Westfalen. The Tetraeder, a 60-metre steel tetrahedron sculpture placed on the Halde Beckstrasse (a 90-metre coal slag heap), has become one of the Ruhr's most recognisable landmarks since its installation in 1995. Movie Park Germany in Bottrop-Kirchhellen is one of northern Germany's largest theme parks. The city's last coal mine, Prosper-Haniel, was also the last operating hard coal mine in all of Germany when it closed on 21 December 2018.
Josef Albers, the Bauhaus artist and colour theorist, was born in Bottrop in 1888; the Josef Albers Museum Quadrat displays his work alongside contemporary art. The Eigen, Bottrop's old village centre, retains some pre-industrial character. Bottrop is squeezed between Essen, Oberhausen, and Gladbeck, part of the continuous Ruhr urban fabric where one city blends into the next. The Kirchhellen district to the north is greener and more suburban. Adult services follow NRW's regulatory framework in a city whose industrial base has shifted toward services and logistics.
