Bruehl: Augustusburg Palace, Phantasialand, and the Rhineland's UNESCO and Theme Park Town
Bruehl has a population around 44,000 and lies in Nordrhein-Westfalen, about 15 kilometres south of Cologne. The town holds two UNESCO World Heritage sites: Schloss Augustusburg, an 18th-century rococo palace built for Archbishop Clemens August, and the adjacent hunting lodge Falkenlust. Phantasialand, one of Germany's most popular theme parks, draws over two million visitors per year and sits on the town's southern edge. Max Ernst, the Dadaist and Surrealist painter, was born in Bruehl in 1891; the Max Ernst Museum opened in 2005 and shows his paintings, sculptures, and graphic work.
