Bueren in Ostwestfalen: Jesuit Legacy and Wewelsburg in the Kreis Paderborn
Bueren lies in the Kreis Paderborn of Nordrhein-Westfalen, with about 22,260 inhabitants spread across the town and its numerous villages in the hilly Paderborner Land. The Jesuitenkirche Maria Immaculata, built in the late 17th century, is one of Westphalia's most significant baroque churches. A Jesuit college operated here for over a century, and the former college buildings now house a school.
Paderborn is roughly 25 kilometres northeast. The Alme valley runs through the municipality. The Wewelsburg, a triangular Renaissance castle on a hilltop near the village of Wewelsburg, gained dark notoriety through its use by the SS during the Third Reich. The castle now houses a comprehensive memorial and museum documenting both its Renaissance origins and the crimes committed there.
The Sintfeld, a high plateau south of Bueren, is one of the windiest areas in NRW and hosts numerous wind turbines.
