Datteln: Canal Crossroads of Europe, Dortmund-Ems-Kanal Junction, and the Waterway Town in the Northern Ruhr
Datteln has a population around 36,300 and lies in the northern Ruhr area of Nordrhein-Westfalen. The town sits at the junction of four major canals: the Dortmund-Ems-Kanal, Wesel-Datteln-Kanal, Datteln-Hamm-Kanal, and Rhein-Herne-Kanal. This makes Datteln the largest canal junction in Europe, with inland shipping traffic passing continuously through the town.
The Schiffshebewerk Henrichenburg, a boat lift on the Dortmund-Ems-Kanal, is now an industrial museum operated by the LWL (Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe). The Haard forest, a large wooded area on former coal mining land, provides recreation to the north. The town centre is compact. Recklinghausen is about 10 kilometres south.
