Dormagen: Roman Durnomagus, Bayer Chemical Works, and the Rhineland Between Cologne and Duesseldorf
Dormagen has a population around 64,000 and lies on the left bank of the Rhine in Nordrhein-Westfalen, midway between Cologne and Duesseldorf. The Romans established the auxiliary fort Durnomagus here on the Lower Germanic Limes. The Bayer chemical plant (Chempark Dormagen) is one of the largest industrial sites in the region, employing thousands and dominating the local economy.
The medieval Zons, a walled town on the Rhine within Dormagen's municipal borders, preserves its 14th-century fortifications almost completely and is often called the "Rhineland Rothenburg." The Historische Windmuehle in Zons is a working grain mill. Dormagen's modern centre grew around the railway station and the chemical industry. The Tannenbusch nature reserve provides forest recreation. Knechtsteden, a Premonstratensian abbey from 1130, lies in the western part of the municipality.
