Dorsten has a population around 80,000 and sits where the Lippe river approaches the Rhine at the far northwestern edge of the Ruhr area in Nordrhein-Westfalen. The Juedisches Museum Westfalen (Jewish Museum of Westphalia), housed in a former synagogue, documents Jewish life in the region. Schloss Lembeck, a Baroque moated castle, is one of the finest in Westphalia and hosts cultural events.
The Hervester Bruch and surrounding wetlands provide a green transition between the Ruhr urban area and the Muensterland. Dorsten was severely damaged during the Second World War as Allied forces crossed the Rhine in Operation Varsity. The Altstadt has been rebuilt but retains the Marktplatz and the Agatha church tower.
