Duelmen: Wild Horses, Muensterland Parkland, and Westphalia's Last Free-Roaming Herd
Duelmen has a population around 48,000 and lies in the Muensterland region of Nordrhein-Westfalen. The Duelmen wild horses (Duelmener Wildpferde), a herd of semi-wild ponies living in the Merfelder Bruch nature reserve, are the last free-roaming horse herd in continental Europe. The annual Wildpferdefang (wild horse roundup), held since 1907, draws thousands of spectators.
The Schloss Buldern, a Baroque manor, and the Burg Vischering near Luedinghausen reflect the Muensterland's castle-dotted landscape. The town centre has the Viktorkirche and a pedestrianised Marktstrasse. Duelmen sits between Muenster (30 kilometres north) and the northern Ruhr area. The Muensterlaender Parklandschaft, with its hedgerows, scattered oaks, and moated Wasserburgen, characterises the surroundings. Adult companionship follows NRW's regulatory framework.
