Dueren has a population around 93,000 and lies between Cologne and Aachen in Nordrhein-Westfalen, at the transition from the Rhine plain to the Eifel hills. The city has been a centre of paper production since the 16th century; the Rur river (not to be confused with the Ruhr) provided water power for dozens of paper mills. The Leopold-Hoesch-Museum and Papiermuseum Dueren document the city's industrial and artistic heritage. Dueren was 99% destroyed on 16 November 1944 in a single Allied bombing raid, one of the highest destruction rates of any German city.
The Battle of Huertgenwald (1944-1945), fought in the forests south and east of Dueren, was the longest single battle fought by the US Army in its history. The city was rebuilt in 1950s functionalist style with little of its medieval heritage surviving. The Rur runs through the centre, and the Rurtalsperre (Rur valley dam) to the south is a popular recreation area. Dueren sits on the main rail line between Cologne (40 kilometres east) and Aachen (35 kilometres west). Adult companionship follows NRW's regulatory framework.
