Grevenbroich has a population around 65,000 and lies on the Erft river in the Rhein-Kreis Neuss of Nordrhein-Westfalen. The city once styled itself Bundeshauptstadt der Energie (federal capital of energy) due to the massive RWE lignite power stations nearby, particularly Neurath and Frimmersdorf. The Tagebau Garzweiler, an open-cast lignite mine, has reshaped the surrounding landscape on an enormous scale, consuming entire villages.
The Altes Schloss, a medieval moated castle, houses the city museum. The Villa Erckens serves as a cultural centre. Grevenbroich consists of multiple formerly independent villages merged into a single municipality, giving it a dispersed, polycentric character. The Erft river, small but historically significant for milling and irrigation, flows through the town. Duesseldorf is 25 kilometres northeast, Cologne 30 kilometres south. Adult companionship follows NRW's regulatory framework.
