Haltern am See has a population around 37,800 and lies at the northern edge of the Ruhr district in Nordrhein-Westfalen, where the Muensterland begins. The Roemermuseum documents the Roman legionary camp Aliso, established around 11 BC as a base for campaigns east of the Rhine. The Varus Battle (9 AD) led to the camp's abandonment. Excavations have revealed extensive military infrastructure.
The Halterner Stausee, a reservoir on the Stever river, provides drinking water for much of the Ruhr area and is also used for sailing and recreation. The Westruper Heide, a heathland nature reserve near the lake, is one of the few surviving heathlands in Westphalia. The Altstadt has a small market square. Recklinghausen is about 15 kilometres south. Muenster is about 50 kilometres north. Adult companionship follows NRW standards.
