Hamminkeln: Issel Lowland Farms, Operation Varsity Airborne Landing Site, and the Lower Rhine Flachland Municipality in the Wesel District
Hamminkeln has roughly 27,400 inhabitants and covers a large municipal area in the Wesel district of Nordrhein-Westfalen. The Issel river and its flat meadows define the landscape. Operation Varsity, the largest single airborne operation in history, landed paratroopers near Hamminkeln in March 1945 during the Rhine crossing. Agriculture, particularly dairy farming, remains important.
Wesel is about 10 kilometres south. Bocholt lies roughly 25 kilometres north. The Dutch border is around 20 kilometres west. Dorsten is to the southeast. Hamminkeln consists of several villages including Dingden, Bruenen, and Ringenberg, connected by country roads across the flat terrain.
