Heinsberg has a population around 41,500 and lies in the far west of Nordrhein-Westfalen, close to the Dutch and Belgian borders. The Landkreis Heinsberg includes the Selfkant, Germany's westernmost municipality. In early 2020, Heinsberg became nationally known as one of the first major Covid-19 clusters in Germany, traced to a carnival session in the neighbouring village of Gangelt.
The town itself centres on the Markt with the Pfarrkirche St. Gangolphus. Heinsberg Burg, the castle ruin above the town, dates from the 11th century. The Begas Museum, housed in a former synagogue, shows works by the 19th-century sculptor Reinhold Begas, who was born here. The flat landscape transitions into Dutch Limburg just to the west. Aachen is about 30 kilometres to the south. The Wurm river flows through the district. Cross-border shopping with the Netherlands is common. Adult companionship follows NRW's regulatory framework.
