Hemer has a population around 37,500 and lies on the northern edge of the Sauerland in Nordrhein-Westfalen, about 20 kilometres southeast of Dortmund. The Felsenmeer ("sea of rocks"), a karst landscape of exposed limestone formations and caves, is the town's principal natural feature and a popular excursion destination. The Heinrichshoehle, a show cave within the Felsenmeer, contains stalactites and the skeleton of a cave bear.
Hemer was a significant Bundeswehr garrison town; the Bluecher-Kaserne hosted troops until 2007, and the former barracks site has been partly redeveloped for the 2010 Landesgartenschau (state garden show). The Sauerlandpark, created from the garden show, remains a recreational area. Iserlohn is the neighbouring town to the south. Dortmund is about 30 minutes by car. Adult companionship operates under NRW's legal framework.
